Is air conditioning safe for babies?

This is a common question that I get asked from first time parents of new borns. All evidence points to a yes! Most doctors agree that it is safer to use an air conditioner with a newborn than to let them stay in a hot, airless and humid environment. In fact, Some experts say that a properly cooled and ventilated room helps your baby to sleep comfortably and reduces the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).

Is air conditioning safe for your baby?

Babies, especially newborns, are not able to adjust their body temperature as well as adults.  As a result, they are susceptible to overheating and heat-related illnesses such as heat rash, dehydration, heat exhaustion or heatstroke. Some experts say that a properly cooled and ventilated room will help babies to sleep comfortably and reduces the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). They suggest  that the temperature of a room should be comfortable for an adult in light clothing. A temperature of between 68 and 72 degrees can also help improve your baby’s sleep. I think a temperature of 75 to 78 would be more sensible in the summer and more environmentally friendly.72A room that is too cold could severely lower your baby’s body temperature, possibly causing hypothermia in infants.  Another concern is that air conditioning can spread germs and may contribute to the spread of the common cold viruses.

Following these tips will help keep your baby safe and comfortable while using an air conditioner.

  • Do not place your babies directly under a vent. Air conditioners tend to have concentrated flows of cold air coming from the vents and this will be too strong for your baby.
  • Dress your infant in loose-fitting clothing made from light fabrics, such as cotton. Over-bundling should be avoided, and the infant should not feel hot to the touch.
  • Use fans and dehumidifiers in your home and other indoor spaces to regulate the temperature. Note:- the air from fans should never blow directly on your infant.
  • Get your AC  regularly serviced for clean and efficient cooling

Conclusion; Pediatricians consider air conditioned rooms safer for sleeping babies than hot, humid rooms lacking circulation.
